चाणक्य नीति चौथा अध्याय

1. निम्नलिखित बातें माता के गर्भ में ही निश्चित हो जाती है....

• व्यक्ति कितने साल जियेगा
• वह किस प्रकार का काम करेगा
• उसके पास कितनी संपत्ति होगी
• उसकी मृत्यु कब होगी

Meaning: Life span, the type of work, wealth, learning, and the time of one's death are determined while one is in the womb of the mother.

2. पुत्र, मित्र, सगे सम्बन्धी साधुओं को देखकर दूर भागते है, लेकिन जो लोग साधुओं का अनुसरण करते है उनमें भक्ति जागृत होती है और उनके उस पुण्य से उनका सारा कुल धन्य हो जाता है।

Meaning: Offspring, friends, and relatives flee from a devotee of the Lord: yet those who follow him bring merit to their families through their devotion.

3. जैसे मछली दृष्टि से, कछुआ ध्यान देकर और पंछी स्पर्श करके अपने बच्चों को पालते है, वैसे ही संत-जन पुरुषों की संगति मनुष्य का पालन पोषण करती है।

Meaning: Fish, tortoises, and birds bring up their young by means of sight, attention and touch; so do saintly men afford protection to their associates by the same means.

4. जब आपका शरीर स्वस्थ है और आपके नियंत्रण में है उसी समय आत्म साक्षात्कार का उपाय कर लेना चाहिए क्योंकि मृत्यु हो जाने के बाद कोई कुछ नहीं कर सकता है।

Meaning: As long as your body is healthy and under control and death is distant, try to save your soul; when death is imminent what can you do?

5. विद्या अर्जन करना यह एक कामधेनु के समान है जो हर मौसम में अमृत प्रदान करती है. वह विदेश में माता के समान रक्षक अवं हितकारी होती है. इसीलिए विद्या को एक गुप्त धन कहा जाता है।

Meaning: Learning is like a cow of desire. It, like her, yields in all seasons. Like a mother, it feeds you on your journey. Therefore learning is a hidden treasure.

6. सैंकड़ों गुणरहित पुत्रों से अच्छा एक गुणी पुत्र है क्योंकि एक चन्द्रमा ही रात्रि के अन्धकार को भगाता है, असंख्य तारे यह काम नहीं करते।

Meaning: A single son endowed with good qualities is far better than a hundred devoid of them. For the moon, though one, dispels the darkness, which the stars, though numerous, cannot.

7. एक ऐसा बालक जो जन्मते वक़्त मृत था, एक मूर्ख दीर्घायु बालक से बेहतर है. पहला बालक तो एक क्षण के लिए दुःख देता है, दूसरा बालक उसके माँ बाप को जिंदगी भर दुःख की अग्नि में जलाता है।

Meaning: A stillborn son is superior to a foolish son endowed with a long life. The first causes grief for but a moment while the latter like a blazing fire consumes his parents in grief for life.

8. निम्नलिखित बातें व्यक्ति को बिना आग के ही जलाती है...

• एक छोटे गाँव में बसना जहाँ रहने की सुविधाएँ उपलब्ध नहीं
• एक ऐसे व्यक्ति के यहाँ नौकरी करना जो नीच कुल में पैदा हुआ है
• अस्वास्थय्वर्धक भोजन का सेवन करना
• जिसकी पत्नी हरदम ग़ुस्से में होती है
• जिसका मूर्ख पुत्र है
• जिसकी पुत्री विधवा हो गयी है

Meaning: Residing in a small village devoid of proper living facilities, serving a person born of a low family, unwholesome food, a frowning wife, a foolish son, and a widowed daughter burn the body without fire.

9. वह गाय किस काम की जो ना तो दूध देती है ना तो बच्चे को जन्म देती है. उसी प्रकार उस बच्चे का जन्म किस काम का जो ना ही विद्वान हुआ ना ही भगवान का भक्त हुआ।

Meaning: What good is a cow that neither gives milk nor conceives? Similarly, what is the value of the birth of a son if he becomes neither learned nor a pure devotee of the Lord?

10. जब व्यक्ति जीवन के दुःख से झुलसता है उसे निम्नलिखित ही सहारा देते है...

• पुत्र और पुत्री
• पत्नी
• भगवान के भक्त

Meaning: When one is consumed by the sorrows of life, three things give him relief: offspring, a wife, and the company of the Lord's devotees.

11. यह बातें एक बार ही होनी चाहिए..

• राजा का बोलना
• विद्वान व्यक्ति का बोलना
• लड़की का ब्याहना

Meaning: Kings speak for once, men of learning once, and the daughter is given in marriage once. All these things happen once and only once.

12. जब आप तप करते है तो अकेले करे। अभ्यास करते है तो दूसरे के साथ करे। गायन करते है तो तीन लोग करे। कृषि चार लोग करे। युद्ध अनेक लोग मिलकर करे।

Meaning: Religious austerities should be practiced alone, study by two, and singing by three. A journey should be undertaken by four, agriculture by five, and war by many together.

13. वही अच्छी पत्नी है जो शुचिपूर्ण है, पारंगत है, शुद्ध है, पति को प्रसन्न करने वाली है और सत्यवादी है।

Meaning: She is a true wife who is clean, expert, chaste, pleasing to the husband, and truthful.

14. जिस व्यक्ति के पुत्र नहीं है उसका घर उजाड़ है. जिसे कोई सम्बन्धी नहीं है उसकी सभी दिशाए उजाड़ है. मूर्ख व्यक्ति का ह्रदय उजाड़ है. निर्धन व्यक्ति का सब कुछ उजाड़ है।

Meaning: The house of a childless person is a void, all directions are void to one who has no relatives, the heart of a fool is also void, but to a poverty-stricken man all is void.

15. जिस अध्यात्मिक सीख का आचरण नहीं किया जाता वह जहर है. जिसका पेट ख़राब है उसके लिए भोजन जहर है. निर्धन व्यक्ति के लिए लोगों का किसी सामाजिक या व्यक्तिगत कार्यक्रम में एकत्र होना जहर है।

Meaning: Scriptural lessons not put into practice are poison; a meal is poison to him who suffers from indigestion; a social gathering is poison to a poverty-stricken person; and a young wife is poison to an aged man.

16. जिस व्यक्ति के पास धर्म और दया नहीं है उसे दूर करो. जिस गुरु के पास अध्यात्मिक ज्ञान नहीं है उसे दूर करो. जिस पत्नी के चेहरे पर हरदम घृणा है उसे दूर करो. जिन रिश्तेदारों के पास प्रेम नहीं उन्हें दूर करो।

Meaning: That man who is without religion and mercy should be rejected. A guru without spiritual knowledge should be rejected. The wife with an offensive face should be given up, and so should relatives who are without affection.

17. सतत भ्रमण करना व्यक्ति को बूढ़ा बना देता है. यदि घोड़े को हरदम बांध कर रखते है तो वह बूढ़ा हो जाता है. यदि स्त्री उसके पति के साथ प्रणय नहीं करती हो तो बढ़ी हो जाती है. धूप में रखने से कपड़े पुराने हो जाते है।

Meaning: Constant travel brings old age upon a man; a horse becomes old by being constantly tied up; lack of sexual contact with her husband brings old age upon a woman; and garments become old through being left in the sun.

18. इन बातों को बार-बार गौर करे...

• सही समय
• सही मित्र
• सही ठिकाना
• पैसे कमाने के सही साधन
• पैसे खर्चा करने के सही तरीके
• आपके ऊर्जा स्रोत

Meaning: Consider again and again the following: the right time, the right friends, the right place, the right means of income, the right ways of spending, and from whom you derive your power.

19. द्विज अग्नि में भगवान देखते है। भक्तों के ह्रदय में परमात्मा का वास होता है। जो अल्प मति के लोग है वे मूर्ति में भगवान देखते है। लेकिन जो व्यापक दृष्टि रखने वाले लोग है, वे यह जानते है की भगवान सर्व व्यापी है।

Meaning: For the twice-born, the fire (Agni) is a representative of God. The Supreme Lord resides in the heart of His devotees. Those of average intelligence (alpa-buddhi or kanista-adhikari) see God only in His sri-murti, but those of broad vision see the Supreme Lord everywhere.
