पद्म पुराण में एक प्रसिद्ध कथा है। यह इस प्रकार है: महादेव भगवान विष्णु की पूजा करते थे और यह देखकर माता पार्वती भी ऐसा ही करने लगीं।
इसलिए, माता शक्ति ने फैसला किया कि वह भगवान विष्णु के सहस्रनाम का पाठ करने के बाद ही भोजन करेंगी।
एक बार शिव जी भगवान विष्णु की पूजा करके कैलाश लौट रहे थे, और उन्होंने माता पार्वती से अपने साथ भोजन करने को कहा। हालाँकि, माता पार्वती ने दावा किया कि वह श्री विष्णु के 108 नामों का पाठ करने के बाद ही भोजन करेंगी।
इस पर, महादेव ने कहा, "पार्वती आप भगवान विष्णु के प्रति भक्ति रखने के लिए बहुत भाग्यशाली हैं, केवल भाग्यशाली के बिना भगवान विष्णु की भक्ति नहीं मिल सकती है, और यह भी बहुत दुर्लभ है"।
महादेव ने माता पार्वती को यह भी बताया कि भगवान विष्णु के 108 नामों का पाठ करने के बजाय, उन्होंने श्री रामचंद्र के नाम का पाठ किया। और श्री राम का नाम भी श्री विष्णु के पूरे 108 नामों के बराबर है।
इसके बाद माता पार्वती ने एक बार श्री राम नाम का उच्चारण किया और महादेव के साथ भोजन करने बैठ गईं। इधर, महादेव ने उन्हें बताया, श्री राम के 108 नाम भगवान विष्णु की तुलना में अधिक प्रमुख हैं। जहाँ श्री विष्णु का एक-एक नाम समस्त वेदों से अधिक दिव्य माना गया है, वहीं राम का एक नाम श्री विष्णु के हजार नामों के बराबर है।
