एक समय की बात है नैषिरण्य तीर्थ में शौनिकादि, अठ्ठासी हजार ऋषियों ने श्री सूतजी से पूछा हे प्रभु! इस कलियुग में वेद विद्या रहित मनुष्यों को प्रभु भक्ति किस प्रकार मिल सकती है? तथा उनका उद्धार कैसे होगा? हे मुनि श्रेष्ठ ! कोई ऎसा तप बताइए जिससे थोड़े समय में ही पुण्य मिलें और मनवांछित फल भी मिल जाए। इस प्रकार की कथा सुनने की हम इच्छा रखते हैं। सर्व शास्त्रों के ज्ञाता सूत जी बोले: हे वैष्णवों में पूज्य ! आप सभी ने प्राणियों के हित की बात पूछी है इसलिए मैं एक ऎसे श्रेष्ठ व्रत को आप लोगों को बताऊँगा जिसे नारद जी ने लक्ष्मीनारायण जी से पूछा था और लक्ष्मीपति ने मनिश्रेष्ठ नारद जी से कहा था। आप सब इसे ध्यान से सुनिए –
मुनिनाथ सुनो यह सत्यकथा सब कालहि होय महासुखदायी।
ताप हरे, भव दूर करे, सब काज सरे सुख की अधिकाई॥
अति संकट में दुःख दूर करै सब ठौर कुठौर में होत सहाई।
प्रभु नाम चरित गुणगान किए बिन कैसे महाकलि पाप नसाई॥
मुनिश्रेष्ठ नारद दूसरों के कल्याण हेतु सभी लोकों में घूमते हुए एक समय मृत्युलोक में आ पहुँचे। यहाँ बहुत सी योनियों में जन्मे प्रायः सभी मनुष्यों को अपने कर्मानुसार अनेक कष्टों से पीड़ित देखकर उन्होंने विचार किया कि किस यत्न् के करने से निश्चय ही प्राणियों के कष्टों का निवारण हो सकेगा। मन में ऐसा विचार कर श्री नारद विष्णुलोक गए।
वहाँ श्वेतवर्ण और चार भुजाओं वाले देवों के ईश नारायण को, जिनके हाथों में शंख, चक्र, गदा और पद्म थे तथा वरमाला पहने हुए थे, को देखकर उनकी स्तुति करने लगे।
नारदजी ने कहा- हे भगवन्! आप अत्यन्त शक्तिवान हैं, मन तथा वाणी भी आपको नहीं पा सकती, आपका आदि-मध्य-अन्त भी नहीं है। आप निर्गुण स्वरूप सृष्टि के कारण भक्तों के कष्टों को नष्ट करने वाले हो। आपको मेरा शत शत नमन है।
नारदजी से इस प्रकार की प्रार्थना सुनकर विष्णु भगवान बोले- हे योगिराज! आपके मन में क्या है? आपका किस कार्य हेतु यहाँ आगमन हुआ है? निःसंकोच कहें।
तब मुनिश्रेष्ठ नारद मुनि ने कहा- मृत्युलोक में सब मनुष्य, जो अनेक योनियों में पैदा हुए हैं, अपने-अपने कर्मों द्वारा अनेक प्रकार के कष्टों के कारण दुःखी हैं।
हे स्वामी! यदि आप मुझ पर दया रखते हैं तो बताइए कि उन मनुष्यों के सब कष्ट थोड़े से ही प्रयत्न से किस प्रकार दूर हो सकते हैं।
श्री विष्णु भगवान ने कहा- हे नारद! मनुष्यों की भलाई के लिए तुमने यह बहुत उत्तम प्रश्न किया है। जिस व्रत के करने से मनुष्य मोह से छूट जाता है, वह व्रत मैं तुमसे कहता हूँ, सुनो, अति पुण्य दान करने वाला, स्वर्ग तथा मृत्युलोक दोनो में दुर्लभ, एक अति उत्तम व्रत है जो आज मैं तुमसे कहता हूँ।
श्री सत्यनारायण भगवान का यह व्रत विधि-विधानपूर्वक सम्पन्न करने पर मनुष्य इस धरती पर सभी प्रकार के सुख भोगकर, मरणोपरान्त मोक्ष को प्राप्त होता है।
श्री विष्णु भगवान के ऐसे वचन सुनकर नारद मुनि बोले- हे भगवन्! उस व्रत का विधान क्या है? फल क्या है? इससे पूर्व किसने यह व्रत किया है और किस दिन यह व्रत करना चाहिये? कृपया मुझे विस्तार से समझाएं।
श्री विष्णु भगवान ने कहा- हे नारद! दुःख-शोक एवम् सभी प्रकार की व्याधियों को दूर करने वाला यह व्रत सब स्थानों पर विजय दिलाने वाला है।
श्रद्धा और भक्ति के साथ किसी भी दिन, मनुष्य सन्ध्या के समय श्री सत्यनारायण भगवान की ब्राह्मणों और बन्धुओं के साथ पूजा करे।
भक्तिभाव से नैवेद्य, केले का फल, नैवेद्य, घी, शहद, शक्कर अथवा गुड़, दूध और गेहूँ का आटा सवाया लेवे (गेहूँ के अभाव में साठी का चूर्ण भी ले सकते हैं)।
इन सभी को भक्तिभाव से भगवान श्री सत्यनारायण को अर्पण करे। बन्धु-बान्धवों सहित ब्राह्मणों को भोजन कराए। इसके पश्चात् ही स्वयम् भोजन करे।
रात्रि में श्री सत्यनारायण भगवान के गीत आदि का आयोजन कर श्री सत्यनारायण भगवान का स्मरण करते हुए समय व्यतीत करे।
इस तरह जो मनुष्य व्रत करेंगे, उनकी मनोकामनायें अवश्य ही पूर्ण होंगी। विशेषरूप से कलियुग में, मृत्युलोक में यही एक ऐसा उपाय है, जिससे अल्प समय और कम धन में महान पुण्य की प्राप्ति हो सकती है।
॥ इति श्री सत्यनारायण व्रत कथा का प्रथम अध्याय संपूर्ण॥

Once upon a time, in Naishiranya Tirtha, Saunikadi, eighty-eight thousand sages asked Shri Sutji, Oh Lord! In this Kali-yuga, how can people without the knowledge of Vedas get devotion to God? And how will they be saved? O best sage! Tell me some kind of austerity which will give merit in a short time and also get desired results. We want to hear this type of story. Sut ji, the knower of all the scriptures said: O revered among the Vaishnavas! All of you have asked about the welfare of the living beings, so I will tell you such an excellent fast which Narad ji had asked Lakshminarayan ji and Lakshmipati had said to Manishreshtha Narad ji. Listen carefully to all of you -
Once upon a time, Yogiraj Narad ji, wandering in many lokas, wishing for the benefit of others, came to the world of death. Here he saw almost all human beings born in many species, suffering from many miseries by their actions. Seeing their misery, Narad ji started thinking how to make efforts, by doing which the sufferings of human beings would surely end. While meditating on this thought, he went to Vishnuloka. There he started praising the Lord of the gods, Narayan, who had conch, chakra, mace and padma in his hands, wearing a garland around his neck.
While praising Narad ji said: Oh Lord! You are endowed with immense power, even mind and speech cannot reach you. You have no beginning, middle and end. Nirguna Swaroop is the one who removes the sorrows of the devotees due to the creation, I salute you. Hearing the praise of Narad ji, Lord Vishnu said: O sage! What's on your mind? What are you here for? Feel free to tell him. On this, Narad Muni said that in the world of death, human beings born in many species are suffering from many miseries by their actions. Oh Nath! If you have mercy on me, then tell me how that person can get rid of his miseries with a little effort.
Sri Hari said: O Narada! You have asked a very good thing for the benefit of human beings. Listen to what I say by which one gets rid of attachment. There is a rare excellent fast in both heaven and the world of death, which gives merit. Today out of love, I tell it to you. By observing this fast of Lord Sri Satyanarayana properly, one gets salvation immediately after enjoying happiness here.
Hearing the words of Shri Hari, Narad ji said that what is the fruit of that fast? And what is his law? Who did this fast? On which day should this fast be observed? Explain everything in detail. Hearing the words of Narada, Shri Hari said: He is the one who removes sorrow and sorrow, it is the one who gives victory over all places. One should worship Sri Satyanarayan in the evening with devotion and reverence, being religious and with Brahmins and brothers. With devotion, take naivedya, banana fruit, ghee, milk and wheat flour. In place of wheat, take sathi flour, sugar and jaggery and mix all edible items and offer it to God.
Offer food to brothers and sisters including brahmins, and then eat food yourself. Get absorbed in the devotion of God with Bhajan, Kirtan. In this way, by observing this fast of Lord Satya Narayan, all the desires of a human being are fulfilled. This is the only simple way of salvation in this Kali period i.e. in Kaliyuga.
